The ritual was originated in the 1920s by the U.S. navy. To alleviate stress on long voyages, they scheduled times to socialize. During prohibition, people had drinks before going to dinner and after prohibition ended, Happy Hour became common practice. Remember TGIF, remember going out for drinks and snacks after work to wind down after a long day of work, well, let’s bring that back. Why can’t we end the day with some celebratory fun, cool drinks, indulgent snacks and social wind down time. It doesn’t have to be Friday. Every day can be Happy Hour day.
In the past, Happy Hour had us having some fun, sharing a drink and snacks with co-workers, and friends. It was stress-relieving time. What happened to that? Now there is rush hour instead of happy hour.
Maybe if we slow down and minimize the hurried lifestyle we have created, we can create our own Happy Hour. At the end of the day, we can meditate, take our tea, coffee, glass of wine or beer or whatever and connect with a friend for an hour. It will make us happy and cause us less mental and emotional traffic jams in our heads and bodies. We don’t even have to leave our homes to celebrate our own happy hour on zoom, on the phone, over the fence in the backyard or at the mailbox.
