How to utilize an apron

When you put on an apron, you’re ready to cook. An apron is inspirational, motivational and mood setting. Your apron is your muse for good work.

Have Aprons gone out of style? I think not. Not by the top TV chefs who wear them. The Apron was a staple accessory for women back in the day. And why? Because it was useful and versatile handy, pretty and provided so many uses while protecting their clothes from spoils. But it actually was more practical than that in so many ways.

Men also donned the apron – in the kitchen, the garage, at the BBQ; the Butchers wore aprons to keep the blood from the slaughtered animals off their clothes, in the tool shop in the mechanics shop, aprons were worn everywhere.

How useful could an apron be? Well, let’s see, not only good for wiping hands, holding tools, and protecting clothes – some had pockets to hold change for the paper boy, rings, safety pins, hair pins, a pen, ruler, some were used to carry the baby, gather eggs, and retrieve cut flowers, and herbs and vegetables from the garden. They were used to dry the dishes if you didn’t have a tea towel near by, wipe their hands, and even just to get into the mood because when you put on the apron, you are in the mood to work.

Many times, as I’ve entered someone’s kitchen to help out, I’ve heard “let me get you an apron, do you want an apron, or here’s an apron”. Get to work!
